NBIA needs your help to increase understanding of the value of business incubation, and to sustain or even expand your program.

A new study conducted for the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration concluded that business incubation programs create far more jobs than other EDA-funded public works projects – and they do so at far less cost per job. The study was announced in an EDA newsletter earlier this month.

With a declining economy and talk of targeted investments in community infrastructure projects through the new economic stimulus package, it is vital that government officials at all levels recognize the value of investing in business incubation as a way to support emerging firms and innovations and to create new jobs. And it’s important that they demonstrate that understanding by supporting and expanding existing incubation programs, as well as by developing new ones.

NBIA has developed a news release about the EDA study findings, which we will release widely. But we need your help in bringing the news to the attention of your local media and government officials at all levels. A copy of the news release and a document providing details of the study are attached to this message.

To help you make the case for continuing support – and even expansion – of your program, we’ve also created a Web site with the tools and information you need to:

Contact your congressional representatives and members of the Obama Administration
Supply information to your local media and government officials about the EDA study
Develop op-ed or other opinion pieces in support of business incubation

Do not delay. While the U.S. House of Representatives has already marked up an economic stimulus bill, the Senate has yet to do so. We now have proof that should make the value of investing in business incubators apparent.
